Site Build It! Advisor

Rick's 3-Column, CSS Template Videos

First let me explain what you need to use the template...

This is not for a raw beginner. Unless you understand basic HTML and feel ready to upload your own HTML to Site Build It! this template may not be for you.

You should also understand modern web design where content (the HTML file) is separate from the design of the page (CSS file). You will no longer be "marking up" the HTML code for fonts, colors, or positioning. So be prepared to learn modern site building techniques.

On the other hand if you have intermediate computer skills, understand file management, can cut-and-paste easily, understand basic HTML (or are ready to learn) and are comfortable installing software, this is something you should be able to handle. In fact, I would compare it to learning to use Blockbuilder for the first time.

And if you are happy with the colors, fonts, and basic layout of the template the only thing you will need to do is build a new header image (or have it done for you). You may never have to touch the CSS file (until you are ready). And simple color changes are easy anyways. But if you are planning on editing the CSS (design) of your site, then be prepared to learn how to use it.

So again, this is NOT for a beginner unless you are prepared for a steep learning curve.

Don't Forget To Thorougly Review SBI!'s Integration Guidelines Before You Build Your Site

When you upload your files to Site Build It! you must structure your files and site in a particular way. Your folder structure, file naming, and link structure must conform to what SBI! needs and expects.

» Be sure to read the Integration Guidelines to make sure you understand the details of uploading your HTML to SBI!

Customization and Training Is Available

Again, I will be offering packages where you can add template customization and training to the price of the template. If there's something else you feel you need let me know. My training and customization charge is $75 per hour. Contact me if you'd like to discuss your needs. But I think these videos will get you started. Let me know if they are helpful or if you need more.

Here's some videos that will help you understand how the template works.

» Intro to Rick's Template - Features (click here)

Here's a look at the basic features of the template including the layout and how the navigation works. You can also get an idea of how the CSS relates to the page.

» Intro to Rick's Template - The Basic Structure

This video explains the parts of the template and shows the underlying <div> (division) structure of the template. It also explains the source order of each division.

» Intro to Rick's Template - The HTML Code

This look "under the hood" explains the HTML code in more detail. This is not something everyone needs to understand, but if you are interested in that aspect of the template it's explained here.

» Working in Kompozer Part 1

» Working in Kompozer Part 2

Kompozer is a free WYSIWYG HTML editor. It's simple and sufficient for doing most of the editing you'll need to do for the template.

In the Part 1 video I explain the basic use and features of Kompozer and how to use it to edit the template. This includes turning text into paragraphs, heads and links. Also how to bring an image into the page and position it correctly.

In Part 2 I explain how to format parts of your content into bold and italic and how to edit your Navigation links.

» Moving Content from your SBI! site into Kompozer - Part 1

» Moving Content from your SBI! site into Kompozer - Part 2

Moving the main content from an SBI! Blockbuilder created site is relatively easy... if you know a few tricks. In this video I'll show you how it's done.

Part 1 covers moving head tags and text content. Part 2 covers moving links and images.

» The CSS File Part 1

» The CSS File Part 2

» Editing the CSS File In Kompozer Part 1

The CSS file controls the positioning and look of all the HTML elements. This separates the structure (content) from the presentation (design). One advantage of using CSS for the design is the HTML code can be kept lean and mean and will load more quickly. It also means you can make site-wide design changes by just editing the CSS code.

» Uploading Your HTML Pages To SBI!

Once you've created your page or pages it's time to upload them to Site Build It!. This video shows the basic process of how to do that.

Remember when you are building your site locally with Kompozer or other editor you then need to upload the complete site including all of its images and utility files like CSS to the SiteSell server. In other words you'll have a local copy of your site and one up on the web.

» The Template's Navigational Structure

The possible Navigation for your site is a little different than typical SBI! convention. There's a top horizontal navigation and a left vertical navigation. You can use the navigation structure any way you want, even turning off the horizontal nav, but my idea was to use the Top Nav for Tier 2 pages and the Vertical Nav for Tier 3s. The idea is when you click on the Top Nav to go to a Tier 2 page the left Nav would change to reflect the Tier 3 pages within that "category."

The goal is to be able to get to any page within 2 clicks. This should make it easier for visitors to find what they want and get them to view more pages and spend more time on your site. This will help all your monetization but especially AdSense.

» Using "Include" Files

Include files are pieces of HTML code that are "included" in a page when a browser calls for that page. You use includes when you have parts of a page that appear frequently on a site. This means if you want to change that part of the page you only have to change the include file and it updates wherever it is used on the site.

Includes are perfect for navigation, footers, AdSense code, and whatever. Just change the include file, upload it and it updates on every page.

Includes are often called "server side includes" because they are "served up" by the server when the browser calls for the page.

Anyway includes are easier to understand when you see them in action so please watch the video.
